HABAKKUK – Overview

“In the world you will have trouble…” – Jesus

Do these words ring true for you? Seems the world is full of chaos these days – at home, in our country, in the schools, and in our world. And not just chaos, but injustice, violence, and wickedness. Today we begin a new series on the book of the prophet Habakkuk – a short three chapters with a really big question – what is God doing about all the evil in the world? Today is just an overview, but over the next 8 weeks we’ll dive deeper and learn to pray like the prophet, to bring our anger to God, and to trust in his justice and mercy.

Discuss the Word

  1. What stood out to you from the overview of Habakkuk?
  2. Where are you seeing injustice and suffering in the world?
  3. How have you asked God “what are you doing about the evils in the world?”
  4. What does God want us to learn from Habakkuk?

During the Week

In order for the Word of God to really take hold in our life we need to read it and listen to it consistently over time. If we want it to move the 18 inches from our head to our heart, we have to slow down and really meditate on it and put it into practice. Below you will find a different question for each day of the week. Slowly reread the passage each day and then answer the corresponding question and complete the action step.

Read Habakkuk 3:17-19 daily before answering the questions:

Monday Make a list of everything the passage tells you about God or Christ.

Tuesday – Make a list of everything the passage tells you about yourself (anything it puts a finger on in you).

Wednesday – Make a list of each example to follow or avoid, commands to obey or do, and promises to claim.

Thursday – If I really believed this, how would I be different?

Friday – Share what you have learned this week with a mentor, spouse, home church host, or a pastor.

Memory verse – Memorize and pray this prayer this week:

Habakkuk 3:17–19

“Though the fig tree should not blossom,

nor fruit be on the vines,

the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food,

the flock be cut off from the fold

and there be no herd in the stalls,

yet I will rejoice in the Lord;

I will take joy in the God of my salvation.

God, the Lord, is my strength;

he makes my feet like the deer’s;

he makes me tread on my high places.”

Ways to Give

Giving of our finances is a response of worship to God who created us, saved us, and is continually at work in the lives of each of His children to reflect more and more of the character of Jesus Christ. Giving is an opportunity to respond to the gospel of Christ in a way that we can find our hearts freed to reflect the generous heart of God.

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”

2 Corinthians 9:7-8
