Welcome to week six of SBC home church. As we continue to go through the book of Philippians together, this resource is a guide for you as you set aside time to stop and worship the Lord by yourself, with your family, or in whatever context you may be.
This week we are looking at Philippians 1:27-2:2, where Paul is encouraging the church in Philippi to pursue unity and community, and to hold fast in the face of suffering and persecution.
Our prayer for this lesson is that we will be reminded of the importance of Christian unity as we live out our faith in the context of community and that we would be ready for persecution when suffering when it happens.
Before reading through the passage, if you’re able, ask someone to open in prayer. (Parents – Ask a child to open up in prayer.)
Sing The Word
Read The Word
- Read Philippians 1:27-2:2 (If you can read Philippians 1:27-2:2 in the NIRV for your children)
(Parents – While watching the sermon encourage your children to draw a picture about something they hear. If you have younger kids write “FAMILY” in block letters and have them color during the message . Then discuss their pictures together as a family.)
Hear The Word
Discuss The Word
When was the last time you had a fight or conflict with a family member? How did you try to resolve it for the sake of unity?
(When was the last time you had a fight with a family member? How did you make it right by putting that person first?)
How do petty quarrels hold you back as you seek to follow Jesus?
(Why do you think arguing about little things can keep you from following Jesus?)
How can christians show their unity in Christ in practical ways?
(In what ways can you show Jesus’ love by putting others first?)
How does Christ’s example challenge our natural tendency toward isolation and self-centeredness?
(How can you choose to be more like Jesus instead of choosing to put yourself first?)
What’s the toughest thing you’ve had to experience as a Christian?
(Parents: share your experience with your kids. Kids: share a time that was hard for you to make the choice that you knew Jesus wanted you to make.)
Practice The Word
Memorize Philippians 3:8 “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ…”
Connect with someone; Who do you know that is suffering for Christ right now? What can you do this week to encourage them?
Take Action; For the sake of unity in Christ, what petty squabbles should you clear up right away? How?
(Jesus tells us to put others first. Who do you need to ask for forgiveness?)
Pray The Word
- Spend some time praying for unity and biblical community in the church. Ask God how you can practically be a part of making that happen.
- Pray for those around the world who are being persecuted and suffering because of their identification with Jesus. Here are a few resources to aid you as you pray.
Ways to Give
Giving of our finances is a response of worship to God who created us, saved us, and is continually at work in the lives of each of His children to reflect more and more of the character of Jesus Christ. Giving is an opportunity to respond to the gospel of Christ in a way that we can find our heart freed to reflect the generous heart of God:
2 Cor 9:7-8 “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”
