Welcome to week nine of SBC Home Church!
This week, we’re looking at Philippians 2:19-30. Interestingly, instead of a more explicit teaching, we get a unique glimpse into Paul’s travelogue; hope you’re ready for the journey!
It’s often easy to skim over these details when reading through Scripture, but there is a lot of gold here if we’re willing to mine just under the surface. We’ll see Paul commend and honor two friends whose behavior and choices model the very instruction he’s been giving!
As we see other’s modeling and “reenacting” the story of Jesus in their own lives, we are challenged to do the same. Maybe you know of Christians yourself who have helped you to grow this way.
Our prayer for this lesson is that as a Church we’d honor those who are making sacrifices to live like Jesus. We want to honor them, much like we do in our Kingdom Worker Highlights. We are also praying that we’d all more perfectly reflect the life of Jesus in our love for others, and grow in putting the interests of others above our own and show genuine concern and love for others – just as we have been loved by our Lord and Savior.
Before you click the link below, have someone read Philippians 2:19-30 and open in prayer.
(Parents – While watching the sermon encourage your children to draw a picture of something that sticks out to them about the message. If you have younger kids, write “Honor and Serve” in block letters for them to color during the message. This can be a great discussion later on as family.)
Discuss the Word
- Who do you know who is living like Jesus? What is it in their life that “reenacts” the lifestyle of Jesus and how has it encouraged you?
(Parents give some examples and then ask your kids, “Who is someone in your life that is an example of Jesus? How does seeing the way they act encourage you to be more like Jesus?”)
- In Philippians 2:29, Paul instructs the church to “honor such men.” To honor someone is to “hold them up in a good light for others to see.” Name three ways you will honor and build up others this week who are living like Jesus.
(Name three things you can do this week to honor and encourage someone.)
- In your own life, how have you been serving your own interests instead of serving others? Share these with others and confess them in prayer, asking God to forgive you and to give you help to change.
(Parents give some examples and then ask your kids, “how have you chosen yourself instead of others this week?” Pray together to confess the choices you’ve made and ask for forgiveness, then ask God to help you choose others instead of yourself.)
- Whose spiritual growth can you be genuinely concerned for this week? What can you do to help them grow in cherishing and modeling Jesus more in their own lives?
(Parents, discuss with your kids what it means to model Jesus in your own life. Then challenge your kids to pick an area in their life they can work on modeling Jesus more this week.)
Practice The Word
Memorize Philippians 2:4-7 “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant…”
Take Action: Remain accountable for doing the three things you shared to encourage and honor others this week. Write them down, set a reminder in your phone, or take action to do them right now!
Connect with someone: Call a friend to confess the ways you’ve been looking only after your own interests, and ask them to be praying for you.
Pray The Word
Pray these two verses this week, asking God to continue to change you to be more like Jesus, as well as to encourage others who are doing the same.
Philippians 1:27 “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel…”
Philippians 2:4 “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

Ways to Give
Giving of our finances is a response of worship to God who created us, saved us, and is continually at work in the lives of each of His children to reflect more and more of the character of Jesus Christ. Giving is an opportunity to respond to the gospel of Christ in a way that we can find our hearts freed to reflect the generous heart of God:
2 Corinthians 9:7-8 “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”
