Welcome to SBC Home Church!
This week, we’re looking at Philippians 4:8-9, so grab a Bible and get ready. Throughout Philippians, Paul is encouraging the church to live a life worthy of the Gospel, seeking God first through prayer. In today’s verses, Paul calls us to focus our thoughts.
Everyday, our minds are filled with tv shows, music, advertisements, podcasts, and even with our very own worry or anxiety. All these things can, and do, influence our behavior. How can we live a life worthy of the Gospel if our minds are filled with things not of God?
Our prayer for this time is that you will be encouraged to be intentional with what you put into your minds. Whether we realize it or not, what we watch, listen, and read influences our mind.

(Parents – While watching the sermon, encourage your children to draw a picture of something that stands out to them in the sermon. For younger kids write “Focus on Jesus” in block letters for them to color and use for discussion later.)

Discuss the Word
- What is something exciting you did this week? Explain.
- During the day, what do you find yourself thinking about the most? Explain. (Parents ask “What is something you think about a lot during the day? Why?”)
- What have you watched lately that has negatively influenced you? (Parents ask “Is there a TV show you watch that may encourage you to choose a bad attitude instead of a good attitude?”)
- Why do we struggle to think/meditate on God and His word? (Why is it hard to focus on God and the things He says in the Bible?)
- Paul gives us a list to “think on these things”. Look over the list and share which one comes easy for you and which one you struggle with? (Parents, share your answers with your kids and then take time discussing a couple of them with your kids.)
- What are some things you fill your mind with (TV, movies, books, music) that you need to stop focusing on and start filling those spots with Jesus?
(Go back to your answer to question 3. If you stopped watching that show, how would it help you to focus on Jesus more?)
Practice The Word
- Memorize Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
- Take Action: Commit to memorizing the verse above. Choose to pray twice a day. Listen to a worship song to begin and end your day.
Pray The Word
- Read Romans 12:2 pray that God will transform your mind each day.
- Pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit over your mind – 1 Thess 5:23
Ways to Give
Giving of our finances is a response of worship to God who created us, saved us, and is continually at work in the lives of each of His children to reflect more and more of the character of Jesus Christ. Giving is an opportunity to respond to the gospel of Christ in a way that we can find our hearts freed to reflect the generous heart of God.
2 Corinthians 9:7-8 “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”
