Greetings SBC! These are challenging times, to say the least. In a world that seems to be unhinged, division and fear surround us.
There is significant tension between church and government, for instance. Is our government overreaching and infringing on our religious liberties, or is it simply asking us to do our part, love our neighbors and slow the spread of Covid?
If that weren’t enough, we find ourselves experiencing some of the greatest racial tensions of this generation. All of this is happening while most of us are unable to sit down and have a cup of coffee with someone and talk all this out, or grab lunch and chat and pray with someone. Instead, we fight it out on social media. The result has been incredible division in our country, and even in the church. In the midst of this, Jesus calls us to unity, not uniformity.
We believe the gospel gives us hope and God and scripture have something to say in these areas. The most relevant word is the eternal Truth. We believe the church, our church, can be light in a dark world and a beacon of hope because of what God has done and is doing in us together as a community.
So, welcome to week two of our dive into the deep waters of:
- Christ & Covid – How do we respond to a world in crisis?
- Christ & Country – How do we respond to a world of politics?
- Christ & Culture – How do we respond to a world of diversity?
So, prepare to get somewhat (or very) uncomfortable, get ready to be challenged, and let’s show each other grace as we wrestle through this together.
Discuss the Word
- How has fear controlled any of your thoughts, emotions, or composure in all this?
- What division have you experienced during this season and how have you fed the division?
- What idols has God been exposing in your own life during this season of pressure and unrest?
- How does righteousness make a nation great, but sin disgrace it? (Proverbs 14:34)
- What ways can we “be the church” even without Sunday services?
Take Action:
- If you know a believer who thinks differently than you about these issues, set up a time to just listen to them and understand their point of view.
- Spend time this week praying specifically for President Trump and Governor Newsom. Pray for their salvation, for wisdom, and for righteous and just judgements. (1 Timothy 2:1-2)

Ways to Give
Giving of our finances is a response of worship to God who created us, saved us, and is continually at work in the lives of each of His children to reflect more and more of the character of Jesus Christ. Giving is an opportunity to respond to the gospel of Christ in a way that we can find our hearts freed to reflect the generous heart of God.
2 Corinthians 9:7-8 “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”
